About the Author
Kate E. Cooper makes her debut as an illustrator in "We Elect a President." Kate is a graduate of The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas (2016) and will be attending college at the University of Notre Dame beginning Fall 2016. She has pursued the arts by earning scholarships to and studying in intensive painting programs at schools such as Columbia University and the Art Institute of Chicago, traveling abroad with Notre Dame to enrich her understanding of art history, and working with and painting portraits of the homeless at Austin Street Center. Emma Ross feels like she's been listening to her mom talk about the Electoral College for most of her life! When she was asked to give input from the perspective of a 4th grader (a target audience for the book), Emma was delighted to help. Emma helped generate ideas for one of the best features of "We Elect a President": Real-life, modern examples that will help younger readers to grasp some of the book's more intangible concepts. The examples helped Emma to better understand how Presidents are elected, and she hopes they will help your children, too. Emma looks forward to more writing ventures after this one!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2016What a great book for a Presidential Election year! This clearly written book is targeted for young people and children, but is useful for ANYONE wondering about our Electoral system for selecting our President. What is it? Why is it? How does it work? What are its advantages? Is it outmoded? (NO!)
The book explains why the Founders distrusted a pure democracy, why the smaller states wanted protections from the tyranny of the larger states, and how the interests of everyone, and the safety of election results are enhanced through the Electoral College.
The book has lots of illustrations, but probably the nicest feature for children are the “Emma’s Corner” boxes where the author’s daughter, Emma, offers a clear eyed example to help explain the principle being explained. There are also “Founder’s Corners” where quotes are provided from our Founders about the principles they were embodying in the government they created and why.
The back of the book has a nice glossary to explain terms the reader might not be familiar with. There is also a section of notes and sources for further reading to help you go deeper than this book on subjects discussed that might interest you related to the Electoral process.
This is terrific!
STRONGLY recommended. I bought three copies for my older grandkids (and their parents, I suspect, will get more clear about this subject as they read this with their kids).

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2016I am embarrassed to say that I never completely understood the Electoral College system, and certainly didn't understand how beneficial the system is to our country's presidential election process. First, I read Tara Ross's "Enlightened Democracy" (for adults), wishing I had been taught the whys and hows as a child. Then, voila! Here comes a book written by the same author for children! I home school my 11-year-old twins, and this book will be an excellent supplement to our government studies leading up to the election.
The author does a wonderful job explaining what might be considered a complex issue to kids, providing examples on a child's level. The author's daughter also contributed to the book, offering explanations that her fellow kids can easily understand! And the illustrations are very cute and colorful. Sometimes non-fiction books for kids can be so busy and cluttered within the text, but this book is very clean and simple in appearance - making it much less intimidating and much more pleasing to read. I think kids will enjoy this light introduction to the Electoral College - and their parents will be grateful for a brushing-up on this important (and timely) topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020This books explains in simple and concise language where the Electoral College came from and why it is so very important. It is written for children, but I think it is a simple explanation that every American should hear in this era of "get rid of the Electoral College." Thank you Tara Ross for your thorough understanding of history and exquisite explanations of our why our republic has endured and prospered for so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource simplifies how the US Founders avoided the tyranny of the majority
Excellent story to help me explain this complicated system to my children, who like most uninformed people, think it's only "fair" the winner with the majority popular vote should win. So sad many adults are not educated on the importance of the electoral college. I love the simple example in the book that a democracy with simple majority vote would be like two wolves and one sheep voting on what's for dinner. Wolves eat sheep! The sheep (like small states, minorities, rural communities, etc.) would always be bullied by tyranny of the majority in a pure democracy. At one time in this nation the "majority" of people thought slavery was OK!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2020Written in a clear concise manner without talking down to the reader. It makes it so understandable on why the electoral college IS a must and why the states would NOT have united had they not had protections such as these. Why would a small state want to be ruled over by a large state and why would a large population state want a smaller population state to have as much say for the smaller population? Excellent explanations!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2016The Electoral College is misunderstood by many. “We Elect a President: The Story of Our Electoral College”, although written for children, clearly explains the Electoral College and other important aspects of the structure of our government to all. Emma's Corner (the author’s fourth-grade daughter's contribution) and The Founders' Corner are wonderful additions! The book is beautiful. I love the illustrations by Kate E. Cooper and the font selection for the print. This book is a must for all students - young and old. Thank you , Tara Ross, for once again teaching us more about America!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2020I only wish I’d had this book when I was a kid! This perfectly explains, in an easy-to-understand way, how the Electoral College came to be, and explains how it preserves our government as a constitutional republic. Designed for parents, teachers AND kids to read and understand. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2016I appreciate Tara and all that she does to educate kids and really everyone who either needs a refresher or to learn for the first time about our great nation and its history and its government. Great subject matter and very interesting presentation! My only constructive criticism has to do with the translation from hard copy format to Kindle. The Kindle edition doesn't allow for changing the font, print size or background. Old eyes find it very difficult to see on a Kindle.
